What is Appium | Philosophy of Appium | Appium Mobile Automation Testing

According to Google, there are nearly 3 million apps in play stores across all platforms like Android, IOS. There is a mobile app for everything you could ever imagine. With the growth of digitalization mobile users are increasing day by day. Business owners who have websites are allowing mobile users to enjoy browsing experience of their web applications on mobile devices. Nowadays the majority of web applications are responsive.

As the mobile app market is increasing tremendously the need for quality testing is also becoming a major challenge mainly in finding automation tool which works on all mobile platforms. Mobile app testing involves testing different devices and platforms. Work for testers will be hectic and they easily get bogged down by the repetitive nature of work. Thankfully there is a way for this daunting task i.e by using automation tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market for mobile automation. Appium is one of the mobile automation tools which is used widely.

As we know every mobile application is made with at least two platforms like Android and IOS. This appium tool allows for testing cross-platform. Earlier we used to have two different frameworks for the same app but with the appium tool, we can use only one framework which not only decreases the cost of product and also it is easy to maintain.

Appium is an open-source tool that can run on all the platforms like Android, IOS and Windows desktops. This tool is used for automation of native, mobile web, and hybrid applications. It also allows to run automated tests on emulator, simulators and actual devices.

The main purpose of Appium is that you should be able to reuse code between iOS and Android, and that’s why when you see the API they are the same across IOS and Android.
Additionally, Appium follows 4 philosophy principles. Let's check out each one of these.

Philosophy of Appium:

  • To automate you need not to modify or recompile your app: As discussed above, appium tool doesn’t require an extra agent in application code. So to automate we don’t need to recompile or modify our app.
  • To write or run tests you need not learn any specific language or framework:  Appium allows writing tests in Ruby, Python, Java, Node.js, Objective-C, PHP, and C#. Therefore, you need not learn any new language/framework to use it.
  • When it comes to automation of API’S, a mobile automation framework shouldn’t require to revamp the wheel: Appium uses WebDriver API, So, it doesn’t revamp the wheel by introducing an entirely new API.
  • Mobile automation framework should be open source: Obviously, this philosophy is mandatory. Appium is an open-source tool, so as per the requirement users can freely modify.

In this Appium training, you will learn Mobile Automation from basics to Framework level with real-time examples. In this course, you’ll learn
